Fire in scripture is often purifying, and it works by destroying the impure. That which is sinful is destroyed, that which is righteous remains:
The nation is purified: Jesus baptized with holy spirit and fire by gathering the grain and burning the chaff. In this metaphor it is not the individual who is made pure, but the nation, as the sinners are cut off.
The believer is purified: Each one’s work is revealed by fire. His unfruitful works are burned away, but he himself survives. Not so the unbeliever…
The creation is purified: At the end of the world, the Lord returns in flaming fire. His people are unharmed by his presence, but the wicked and everything fallen is burned up. The universe is purified by the destruction of sinners.
